Say Yes to Consent was a team who found an issue in our high school, teens not communicating before sexual involvement. Our solution was to spread awareness and teach consent.
I managed a group of team members to create an app to help spread awareness about consent. As the account executive on the team, I was in charge of assigning a part to everyone on the team as well as picking up whatever wasn't getting done. I was a responsible leader, effective communicator, and creative as I was working with my team.
The Beginning
Since we had an uncomfortable topic to talk about, we did massive research to make sure we didn't miss anything and were knowledgeable in our topic. Over the course of four months, we learned how to effectively communicate and target our audience. I felt the need for our project since it was not talked about in our schools or even by adults and it grew more apparent that my peers weren't talked about it either. We conducted mass surveys to our peers and underclassmen and found that more than 50% were never taught about it. Through our survey, we found that most of them preferred to receive information through an app or website. With my team, we made a website and a prototype of our app. We received feedback by mentors on two occasions and made the following changes that would fit best.
Hour of Code Tech Fair
We presented at our school's Hour of Code Tech fair to many professionals that whose jobs ranged from teachers to CEO's of companies. After hours of presenting to anyone who came at our booth, they were asked to vote. We won second place and I was proud of my project but most of all my team members
Marketing & Social Media
The next phase was to market and spread awareness throughout our community. We created social media accounts and asked our friends to get the word out through retweeting and reposting to their own followers to create a buzz about this in our school. We hosted a 'Healthy Relationships Fair' to open up communication between our project to the community. We had interactive activities such as writing a consent pledge, winning various grab items, and a photo booth. We wanted to connect to our audience and make it also inclusive.
Ignited Presentation
Shortly after, my team along with six other teams went to Ignited, a marketing company, to present our projects to business professionals and how they affected our communities. We presented to the best our project had to offer, why we felt it was necessary, and how we marketed our project to our community. After lunch, the votes were in, and we won first place!
